Neuschwanstein Castle, Bavaria, Germany Neuschwanstein Castle is the height of fairy tale castles. In fact, it was build for Ludwig II of Bavaria in 1869 by a theatrical set designer, rather than an architect. The name means "New Swan Stone," after a Wagner opera.
